Barishal Division Welfare Association Holds Discussion to Mark Sher-e-Bangla’s 153rd Birth Anniversary

The Barishal Division Welfare Association organized a discussion meeting to mark the 153rd birth anniversary of Sher-e-Bangla A. K. Fazlul Huq. The meeting was held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday at the association’s office at 5 College Street, Dhanmondi, Dhaka.

Presided over by the association’s president, Md. Shah Alam, the meeting focused on Sher-e-Bangla’s life, work, and contributions to social reform. Various aspects of his life and achievements were highlighted based on an essay titled “Sher-e-Bangla A. K. Fazlul Huq: A Social Reformer,” written by Dr. Dewan Azad Rahman.

Among those who took part in the discussion were Dr. Dewan Azad Rahman, Dr. Md. Selim, Mohammad Abdul Mannan, poet Jahangir Hossain, Mohammad Russell, and others.

The speakers said that Sher-e-Bangla A. K. Fazlul Huq was a people’s leader dedicated to establishing the rights of ordinary citizens. His initiatives to protect the interests of farmers and tenants, reduce agricultural debt, combat exploitation by moneylenders, reform the land system, and expand education hold an important place in Bengal’s history. The speakers also recalled his contributions to improving the lives of disadvantaged communities and promoting women’s education.

They further noted that Sher-e-Bangla’s presentation of the Lahore Resolution in 1940 and his role in the United Front election of 1954 were significant milestones in the political history of the Indian subcontinent. His political philosophy and public welfare initiatives, they said, remain relevant today.

The discussants emphasized the importance of introducing the younger generation to Sher-e-Bangla’s ideals of justice, humanity, and public welfare. They said that a meaningful tribute to his legacy requires the implementation of farmer-friendly policies, equal access to education, and effective initiatives to reduce social inequality.
