Ashoka and BGCCI ties their hands for the 'Wellbeing' of RMG Sector
Ashoka Innovators for the Public (Bangladesh) and Bangladesh German Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BGCCI) signs Memorandum of Understanding to work together in improving the life of workers in the Ready-made Garments sector of Bangladesh.
Ashoka, an International organization, head quartered in the Washington D.C. has been in Bangladesh since 1988, started its work in 2016 with a vision of improving the workers’ wellbeing in the RMG Sector. Supported by the Levi Strauss Foundation, Ashoka aims to launch a holistic wellbeing platform to bring innovations in the sector with focus areas such as healthcare, training & development, financial inclusion, family care.
`We need to create a strong ecosystem, and innovations to improve the life of the workers. This will eventually improve efficiency, productivity in the sector and will go as far as reaching this exciting target a $50 Billion industry’, says Abdullah Chowdhury (Robin) – Country Director, Ashoka Bangladesh.
On the other hand, BGCCI as the largest bilateral chamber in Bangladesh, working very closely with multiple sectors, especially with RMG sector. They are also very keen to provide support to the members belonging in this sector.
Both organizations have partnered to initially launch an International Conference, on the 20th May 2017, at the Radisson Hotel, `Fabric Discourse – Wellbeing in the Apparel Sector’ to present its plans, engage key leaders and influencers to identify opportunities in addressing the wellbeing of the workers.
`Wellbeing is a new and exciting initiative, particularly for an industry where we have multi-faceted challenges. While other bodies are addressing some critical challenges, we feel the time is ripe for us to focus on an area that needs attention’, says Taufiq Ali, President of BGCCI and Country Head of Commerzbank AG.
The MoU was signed by the Country Director of Ashoka, Mr Abdullah Chowdhury (Robin), and the President of BGCCI. Board of Director, and Members of both Ashoka Bangladesh, BGCCI, and Ice Business Times were also present during the event.
